20 - Benefit of Shrāddha Performance under Different Constellations.

This chapter is incorporated from Mbh. Anushasana 89. 

Bruhaspati said: 

1. Listen to a detailed account of all those Shraddhas which Yama mentioned to Shashabindu. They are to be performed under different constellations severally.2 

2. Vişhnu Dh.s. (78.8-15) mentions the rewards obtained by performing Shraddha under different constellations from Kruttika to Bharani. Yājāavalkya I. 265-268, MK.P. 30.8-16, BM.P. 220.33-42, KP.II. 20.9-15, Bd.P.2.3.18 deal with the same topic though there is some disagreement about the benefits promised. 

The counting of Nakşhatras from Kruttikä and not from Aśhvini shows that this chapter (and also the Mbh. chapter, the source of this chapter) was written some time before 500 A.D. when the Vedic counting of Nakşhatras was prevalent. 

2. He who maintains the sacrificial fires for ever and performs a Shraddha (when the Moon is) in conjunction with the Kruttikă constellation, becomes free from worries and ailments along with his children. 

3. A person desirous of children should perform a Shraddha under Rohiņi. By performing a Shrāddha under the Saumya (Mrugashiras) constellation one attains vigour and vitality. Generally, the man of ruthless activities performs a Shraddha under Ardra. 

4-5. One performing a Shrāddha under the Punarvasu constellation becomes the possessor of fields and begets sons. He will be blessed with wealth and food-grains as well as sons and grandsons. A man who desires satisfaction and contentment should perform Shrāddha under Puşhya constellation. One shall attain heroic sons by worshipping Pitris under Āśhleşhå. 

6. He who performs a Shrāddha under Maghā becomes the most excellent among his kinsmen. A man worshipping Pitris in the (Pūrvā) Phalguni constellation attains good fortune. 

7. He who performs a Shraddha under Uttarăphalguni constellation becomes the leader (in his community) along with his children. He who performs Tarpaņa to Pitris under the Hasta constellation becomes the chief of good men. 

8. He who performs a Shrāddha in the Chitra constellation sees (has) handsome sons. He who performs a Shrāddha under the Svati constellation becomes a scholar and attains profit. 

9. A man wishing for sons shall perform a Shraddha in the Vishakha constellation. He who performs a Shraddha in the Anurādha constellation extends his realm. 

10. He who performs a Shrāddha under the Jyeşhthă constellation attains lordship and excellence for ever. Those who desire health shall perform a Shrāddha under the Mūla constellation. Those who desire great fame should perform a Shrāddha under Pūrväşhadha. 

11. A man performing a Shraddha under the Uttarāshādha constellation shall be free from grief. By performing a Shrāddha under the Shravana constellation, one shall attain the greatest goal in excellent worlds. 

12. A man who performs a Shrāddha under the Dhanişhthà constellation gains a kingdom and attains enormous wealth. By performing a Shraddha under the Abhijit constellation, (he) obtains goats and sheep as fruit. 

13. He who performs a Shraddha in the Shatabhişhak constellation attains success as a great physician. He who performs a, Shraddha in the Purva-Bhadrapada (Proshthapada) constellation attains goats and sheep as the fruit. 

14. He who performs a Shrāddha unfailingly under Uttarā Bhadrapadà shall obtain thousands of cows. He who per forms a Shräddha under the Revati constellation gets much wealth. By performing a Shrāddha under the Aśhvini constellation one attains horses. He who performs a Shrāddha in the Bharani constellation attains long life. 

15. By performing a Shrāddha according to these injunctions Shashabindu attained the entire earth. After attaining the entire earth, he praised him (Yama).
